Documentary film of the year
This afternoon I saw “Antartica: A Year on Ice”. Now I have to decide whether to find my dogs a new home so I too can experience what living at a research station in Antartica is like. Not really, but no other documentary film has had such an impact on me. I really did leave the theater pondering the idea of uprooting my life. I’ll be truly surprised if it isn’t at least a candidate for an Academy Award this year. It’s not just that it is filled with breathtaking imagery. The film does an amazing job of capturing life inside a small community (less than 100 people during the six months that constitute winter at the US station). The only negative is that it gives no, as in literally zero, idea to the viewer what sort of research is done. Which means the viewer is left with no idea why these obviously expensive research stations exist.
